Methanol production returns to North America on back of shale gas surge

Methanol’s comeback in North America, another consequence of the shale gas revolution, is quickly gaining momentum. Two dormant plants have been restarted, another is scheduled to be back online later this year, and several new plants are under construction or in development. These projects will increase North America’s methanol capacity by 7.88 million m.t./year between 2012 and 2017, to a total of 9.76 million m.t./year, according to a tally kept by IHS Chemical.
