Europe sheds 50% of its VAM capacity, market oversupplied

Celanese’s recent announcement that it would close its 200,000-m.t./year vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant at Tarragona, Spain, is the second VAM closure to be confirmed in Europe in the space of one month (CW, Nov. 4/11. p. 13). Ineos announced plans in October to close its 300,000-m.t./year VAM facility at the Saltend production complex, near Hull, UK, although that decision will not affect Ineos’s 240,000-m.t/year ethyl acetate plant at the site, which will remain in production.
