Chemical Week Magazine :: Basic Chemicals & Plastics Accident Keeps Braskem Unit Offline10:19 AM MDT | June 13, 2011 | —LINDSEY BEWLEY Braskem’s chlor-alkali unit at its Maceio facility at Alagoas, Brazil has been shut down following a chlorine leak and subsequent pipeline rupture on May 21 and May 23. The Maceio unit has a capacity of 250,000m.t./year of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), 460,000 m.t./year of caustic soda and about 600,000 m.t./year of ethylene dichloride (EDC). The company took the chlor-alkali unit offline following the chlorine leak and says there is enough chlorine and caustic soda stock to cope with about 10 days of supply constraints.
