Slow demand keeps caustic soda prices stable in Brazil

South America is a net importer of caustic soda. As a whole the region produced 1.9 million m.t. of caustic soda last year and consumed 4.1 million m.t., according to the latest IHS Market Advisory Service:Global Chlor-Alkali. Caustic soda prices in the region have nevertheless been fairly stable, and spot prices for Brazil averaged $455–460/dry m.t. between October 2013 and March 2014, according to IHS Chemical data.
