The CW75 index rose 1.5% for the week ending May 9. Basic chemical shares rose 3.3% on news that analysts expect second-quarter basic chemical margins to increase because of improved demand in March. “The late first-quarter price increases in both the ethylene and chlor-alkali chain were supported by extensive outages in the first quarter, improved exports, and a seasonal rise in demand,” says Merrill Lynch (New York) analyst Don Carson.
