The CW75 Index fell by 1% for the week ending January 31, but chemical companies mostly reported fourth-quarter earnings in line with analysts’ estimates. Basic chemical volumes, however, were “typically weaker than expected as customers drew down inventories in the face of falling prices,” says Merrill Lynch (New York) analyst Don Carson.
