The CW75 Index rose 1.3% for the week ending March 14. Basic chemical stocks fell by less than 1% because several analysts’ reports say ethylene margins are eroding, and first-quarter earnings estimates for producers may be too high. Diversified and specialty chemical shares rose 2% and about 1%, respectively. Broader stock markets were helped by the narrowing of the U.S. account deficit in the fourth quarter, positive earnings results from financial firms, and news that General Motors reported a profit.
