The CW75 Index jumped 5% for the week ending September 16, despite a stock market slide. Falling oil prices and BASF’s offer to buy Ciba Specialty Chemicals helped to lift the index. Ciba’s stock price jumped 30% following the offer. Monsanto’s positive fourth-quarter earnings forecast also helped to boost the index, analysts say. Basic chemical stocks rose 11%; diversified chemical stocks, 4%; and specialty chemical shares, 1%.
