DSM to Close Netherlands Fertilizer Unit and Take Ammonia Off Rails

DSM says it will close its fertilizer complex at Ijmuiden, the Netherlands by January 1, 2010 to avoid transporting ammonia by rail. DSM ships ammonia from its main fertilizer complex at Geleen, to Ijmuiden some 200 kilometers away where it is used to make fertilizers. The announcement comes amid pressure from the Dutch government to reduce hazmat rail transportation in the country and follows a similar move by Akzo Nobel in 2006 in which Akzo announced plans to relocate chlorine production from Hengelo, the Netherlands, to its Delfzijl, the Netherlands complex...
