G8 Leaders Announce Long-Term Emissions Target but Avoid Making a Shorter-Term Commitment; Fail to Secure Agreement with Developing Nations (Update)

Leaders of the G8 industrialized countries agreed on July 8 at a summit meeting at L’Aquila, Italy to work together to limit the effects of global warming to a rise in the average world temperature of 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels. They also agreed to cut their countries' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% by 2050. The aim is to achieve an overall decrease in GHG emissions of 50% by 2050, including cuts made by developing countries.
