Merck KGaA May Divest Generics

Merck KGaA is considering plans to divest its generic drugs business and could raise up to €4 billion ($5.3 billion) from the sale, according to a report in German newspaper Handelsblatt on January 4. Merck KGaA declined to comment on the report. Selling generics would cut Merck KGaA’s debt following the company’s imminent purchase of biotechnology firm Serono for over $13 billion.
