Merck KGaA Lowers Full-Year Sales Outlook as Growth in Demand for Liquid Crystals Slows

Merck KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany) reported an 8.4% drop in third quarter earnings before interest and tax (Ebit) to €333 million ($463.5 million) on sales 4% higher at €2.53 billion. “The primary reason for the decline in profitability was a weakening of the performance materials division, which faced a slowdown in its respective end-user industries, and the increase in R&D costs,” the company says. Merck KGaA is the world’s largest producer of liquid crystals for display screens. Net profit rose 7.5% to €226.6 million...
