German chemical industry: Restrained start to second-half 2013

The chemical industry in Germany slowed during third-quarter 2013, chemical trade association VCI (Frankfurt) says. Production in July–September remained at the level of the strong second quarter largely because of weak demand for pharmaceuticals, VCI says, but increased 1.5% year-on-year (YOY). Capacity utilization also improved, according to VCI. Foreign sales were weaker than in the previous quarter, but domestic consumption rose on demand from the automotive sector and from building and construction.
