Total Chemical Results Return to Profit on Improved Demand

 Total says first-quarter operating income for its chemicals business swung to a €157 million ($209 million), compared to a €32-million loss in the year-ago period. Sales jumped 31%, to €4.2 billion.  Base chemicals operating income was €44 million, compared to a €40-million loss, on sales up 43%, to €2.5 billion. Petrochemical margins improved, and polymer sales volumes "remained stable," Total says. Specialties operating income soared seven-fold, to €117 million, on sales up 17%, to €1.7 billion...
