Ex-boss of Total Charged

A court at Toulouse, France has decided to bring charges against Total and its former chairman Thierry Desmarest as part of a criminal trial covering the September 2001 explosion at the AZF fertilizer plant of Grande Paroisse, a Total subsidiary. Desmarest was chairman of Total at the time of the blast. The trial, which opened last month, originally charged Grande Paroisse and the former manager of the Toulouse plant, Serge Biechlin (CW, March 2, p. 5).
