Futerro Starts PLA Unit Bayer Boosts Polyisocyanates

Total Petrochemicals says Futerro, its 50-50 joint venture with biotechnology company Galactic (Brussels), has started up production at its 1,500 m.t./year bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) demo unit at Escanaffles, Belgium. Engineers will use the unit to test and improve Futerro’s two-step process, which involves fermentation of sugar from beets followed by polymerization of the monomer to produce biodegradable plastic granules.
