EU chemical output falls 2.8% in March, contracts 2.1% in first quarter

Chemical production shrank 2.8% in the European Union in March compared with the same month last year, and fell by 2.1% in the first quarter of 2013 versus the year-ago quarter, according to the latest Chemicals Trends Report, published by Cefic today. The main drag on output was basic inorganics, which declined 6.1% in March compared with a year ago. Output of petrochemicals was down by 3.4%, and the production of polymers and consumer chemicals decreased by 1.6% and 1.0%, respectively, on a year-on-year (YOY) basis.
