EU Adopts Mercury Export Ban

The European Environment Council, composed of environment ministers from European Union (EU) states, has adopted legislation banning exports of mercury from the EU (CW, July 25, 2007, p. 7). The ban will take effect March 2011. The law requires that mercury no longer used by the EU chlor-alkali industry be put into safe, permanent storage.
