Merck’s Chemical Income Slips

Merck KGaA’s chemicals business reported full-year 2007 operating income down 1.6%, to €631 million ($923 million), on sales up 1.8%, to €2.15 billion. Unfavorable currency exchange rates negatively impacted sales growth by 5.6%, and divestments by 1.2%, Merck says. The chemicals business is made up of Merck’s liquid crystals division and the performance and life science chemicals division.
