ECHA opens public consultation on alternatives to HBCDD

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; Helsinki) says it has opened a public consultation on alternatives to hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). The agency says 13 coapplicants have submitted a joint application for authorization for HBCDD under the European Union's Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (Reach) regulations. The uses applied for are for the formulation and manufacture of expanded polystyrene using HBCDD as the flame-retardant additive, for subsequent use in building and construction.
