Showa Denko’s chemicals and petrochemicals businesses report higher earnings

Showa Denko recorded a 23.5% fall in net profits for the first quarter ended 31 March compared with the year-ago quarter, to ¥4.07 billion ($41.2 million). First-quarter sales increased 6.1%, to ¥192.4 billion, largely because of higher sales in the company's petrochemicals business segment, Showa Denko says. Showa Denko’s petrochemicals segment recorded a 40% rise in first-quarter sales compared with the year-ago period, to ¥65.9 billion, and operating profits for the segment increased by more than 12 times, to ¥937 million.
