Shin-Etsu reports rise in profits, sales

Shin-Etsu Chemical reports a 20.3% increase in net profits for the fiscal first-quarter, ended 30 June, compared with the year-ago period, to ¥32 billion ($321 million). First-quarter sales increased 1.6%, to ¥270.9 billion. During the first quarter of the fiscal year, a gradual recovery continued in the United States, but the economic slowdown in Asia was a matter of concern and the economic stagnation in Europe continued, Shin-Etsu says.
