Chemtura files suit against new California fire-safety rule

Chemtura today announced it has filed a lawsuit in Superior Court of California in Sacramento seeking to overturn California’s new fire-safety standard for upholstered furniture. The new standard, which requires furniture meet a cigarette “smolder test” to be considered safe for the public, is weaker than the old standard, Chemtura says. Until recently, California’s rules also required furniture to meet an “open flame” test in addition to the cigarette smolder test. The open flame test ensures the furniture does not ignite...
