U.S. Lawmakers Prepare to Vote on Chemical Plant Security

The House Energy and Commerce Committee plans to take up chemical plant security legislation tomorrow that could result in a full House vote on Inherently Safer Technology (IST) in a manner of weeks. The bill, which is expected to pass the full committee, would amend existing Chemical Facility Antiterrorism Standards (CFATS) to require certain facilities to consider IST, a revision that industry representatives say would give rise to a long list of cumbersome and unnecessary requirements.
