Dow Chemical profit rises on cheap feedstocks and agriculture

Cheap natural gas and strong agriculture markets lifted Dow Chemical’s first-quarter earnings ahead of estimates, but chairman and CEO Andrew Liveris says that, given "persistent volatility and uncertainty," the company will continue to operate on the assumption that there will be no macroeconomic improvement in 2013. The company reported net income of $550 million for its fiscal first quarter, ended 31 March, up 33.5% from the year-ago quarter.
