U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Belarusian Refining and Chemical Companies

The U.S. has imposed additional sanctions on four Belarusian refining and chemical companies, aiming to induce the country's president, Alexander Lukashenko, to release political activists, journalists, and human rights advocates who were jailed last December following a disputed presidential election. Lukashenko, a Soviet-style leader who has suppressed opposition to his rule, was declared the winner in the election, which was widely criticized by international observers.
