WTO rules that China's restrictions on rare earth exports violate trade regulations

The World Trade Organization (WTO; Geneva) has ruled that China's export restrictions on the key industrial raw materials rare earths, molybdenum, and tungsten violate international trade rules. A WTO panel announced today its findings in a case that was brought jointly by the United States, European Union, and Japan in March 2012. The panel found that China's export restrictions on rare earths, molybdenum, and tungsten are designed to benefit domestic Chinese consuming industries by providing them with relatively cheap raw materials and by driving up prices paid...
