China’s Hubei Province launches carbon trading market

The Chinese government says that Hubei Province in central China launched a carbon trading market on 2 April, making the province the sixth location in China to establish such a trading platform. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC; Beijing), China’s top economic planning agency, approved in November 2011 a pilot trading scheme for greenhouse gas emission rights in seven locations, including Beijing, Guangdong Province, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, in an effort to encourage reductions of carbon emissions.
