Dow Closes Australia PS Plant

Dow Chemical says it has shut down its 35,000-m.t./year polystyrene (PS) plant at Altona, Australia, citing the inability to secure a long-term, economic supply of styrene. Dow says it will maintain sales and technical support for its customers in Australia and New Zealand, and will supply them from its plants in Asia. The company was taking styrene feedstock from Huntsman, the only styrene producer in Australia, with a 110,000-m.t./year plant at West Footscray.
