Intermediate spot prices drop

February contract talks have begun for intermediates, players say, but the focus was still on spot markets this week. Despite reports of tightness in para-xylene in China, the late-month US contract was settled lower by a token 25 cts/lb. Spot prices slumped $50/m.t. on both sides of the Atlantic. Ortho-xylene, in contrast, was firmer with US spot gaining 2 cts/lb to pull into parity with European trading. Ethylene glycol was firmer by 2 cts/lb in North America and $50/m.t. in Europe, traders report, while acrylonitrile was said to gain...
