ECHA Fights to Hold onto its Budget

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; Helsinki), the body responsible for managing the Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of Chemicals (Reach program), is fighting to hold onto its €30 million/year ($36.3 million) budget for 2010 in the face of cuts proposed by European Union (EU) member states.   EU governments in the EU’s preliminary draft budget (PBD) for 2010 have proposed cutting ECHA’s funding to €25.3 million.   The European parliament’s environment committee in the past week voted to maintain ECHA’s...
