Methanex Cuts Chilean Workforce

Methanex says it has reduced its workforce in Chile by 39 employees, or 15%. The company’s methanol production in Chile has been running at 30% capacity since June of last year because of a lack of natural gas supply from Argentina (CW, Sept. 5/12, 2007, p. 6). The Argentine government has also increased its natural gas export duty, essentially tripling the taxes that Methanex must pay to about $7/million Btu, a company spokesperson says.
