Compass Minerals results surge on heavy winter weather salt sales

A heavy winter in fourth quarter of 2013 pushed sales and earnings upwards for Compass Minerals fueled by strength in the salt segment, according to results released today. Net income for the quarter increased 94%, to $58.4 million year-over-year (YOY). However, earnings per share of 90 cts/share fell below analyst consensus of $1.75/share. Earnings include a net benefit from special items of $2.9 million.
