Bhopal Site Shows Little Sign of Care

The tragedy that beset Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh, India on December 3, 1984 stands as one of the world’s worst industrial accidents. A pesticide plant operated by Union Carbide’s 51%-owned subsidiary, Union Carbide India Ltd. (UCIL), ran out of control and an exothermic reaction caused a cloud of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas to be released over the surrounding community.
