A pesticide plant operated by Union Carbide’s 51%-owned subsidiary, Union Carbide India Ltd. (UCIL), ran out of control and an exothermic reaction caused a cloud of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas to be released over the surrounding community. The immediate death toll was estimated at 3,000 and many more--between 8,000 and 28,000, according to differing organizations and reports--subsequently died over the years due...
