Japan Sets New Target to Cut GHG Emissions

The Japanese government plans to revise and set new targets to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by March 2008, after failing to meet its target under the Kyoto Protocol. The latest government data shows that Japan’s emissions increased by 7.8% from 1990 levels in March 2006. When it ratified the Kyoto Protocol, Japan declared to cut its emissions by 6% by 2012. That news follows an announcement earlier this year by Shinzo Abe, former Japanese Prime Minister, of Japan’s “Cool Earth 50” initiative to halve global GHG emissions by 2050...
