California Senate Rejects Plastic Bag Ban

The California State Senate has rejected a bill banning the use of plastic bags by retailers, grocers and other establishments. The bill was vociferously opposed by ACC. It would have banned the use of the bags at supermarkets, large pharmacies and retailers in 2012, and smaller stores in 2013, replacing them with recycled paper bags or reusable totes. Consumers would have bought the recycled paper bags at the cost to the store, about four to six cents. Republicans and some Democrats opposed the measure, which was defeated 21 to 14.
