People & Business :: Energy and Feedstocks Virent, HCL Secure Funding for Pine Tree Sugars-to-Biomaterials Project10:28 AM MST | January 5, 2011 | Alex Scott Virent Energy Systems (Madison, WI) and HCL CleanTech (Oxford, NC) say they have secured $900,000 in public funding for a project to demonstrate a process for converting cellulosic sugars derived from pine trees into ‘drop-in’ biofuels and biomaterials. The funding is a ‘Bird’ energy grant jointly provided by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the government of Israel. The grant supports almost half of the $2.1 million total project cost.
