UK government invites bids for large-scale shale fracking

The government has today announced plans to open large parts of the United Kingdom for oil and gas exploration, including unconventional oil and gas that can only be produced by fracking. The 14th onshore licensing round is inviting companies to bid for exploration licences in about half of the UK, but there will be strict rules covering national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty.
