Evonik researches bacterial conversion of syngas to specialty chemicals

Evonik Industries has succeeded in using biotechnology methods to convert synthesis gas (syngas) to pure 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (2-HIBA) under industrial conditions, the company has announced. 2-HIBA is a precursor used in the manufacture of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). 2-HIBA can also be produced via chemical synthesis. The chemically produced and biotech-produced products can each be converted to methyl methacrylate (MMA). Evonik is one of the largest producers of MMA.
