Compass Minerals: Mild winter cuts into fourth-quarter earnings

Compass Minerals (Overland Park, KS) on Wednesday reported net earnings for the fourth quarter 2012 of $30.1 million, down 31% from $43.9 million in the year-ago period. Sales for the quarter of $267.1 million fell $39.0 million year-on-year (YOY). Net earnings were 90 cts/share, down from $1.31/share in the year-ago quarter and short of the average earnings estimate of 98 cts/share.
