People & Business :: Corporate Social Responsibility Houston Asks Oil and Chemical Firms to Volunteer in Benzene-Reduction Program12:40 PM MDT | July 25, 2007 | Kara Sissell The City of Houston has asked major refiners and chemical makers in the area to participate in a voluntary benzene emission-reduction program, in hopes that facilities sign on to help the area reduce what the city says are dangerously high levels of benzene. The city has also asked facility managers to propose alternative emission-reduction strategies if the measures outlined in the plan are not deemed by plant managers to be cost effective, says Karl Pepple, director/environmental programming for the City of Houston.
