European court dismisses appeal of 2009 calcium carbide cartel case, reduces some fines

The General Court of the European Union (Luxembourg) ruled on appeals by SKW Stahl-Metallurgie (SKW; Unterneukirchen, Germany); Evonik Degussa, a subsidiary of Evonik Industries; and Gigaset, formerly Arques (Starnberg, Germany) against a European Commission decision in July 2009 to fine the companies for participating in a price-fixing cartel in the market for calcium carbide and for magnesium-based reagents, the court announced today.
