Cross-Industry Group to Develop Standards for Rail Tank Car Design

Dow Chemical, Union Pacific (UP), and Union Tank Car (Chicago) have formed an alliance with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to develop a next-generation rail tank car with improved safety and security features. The goal of the alliance is to establish a federal design standard for railcars that carry toxic by inhalation (TIH) materials, with which all shippers and carriers must comply, alliance members say.
