Basell to Acquire Shell Refinery in France

Basell says it has offered to acquire Shell’s refinery at Berre, France for $700 million. The deal is expected to close in early 2008. Basell says it is currently the largest customer of the Berre refinery, buying feedstock to supply olefins and polyolefins plants at the same site. Basell also operates a polyethylene unit at nearby Fos-sur-Mer. The deal forms part of a previously announced plan by Shell to divest all three of its refineries in France.
