Tata Chemicals to close UK soda ash plant

Tata Chemicals Europe, the only producer of soda ash in the United Kingdom, plans to close the bigger of its two production facilities in the first half of 2014, which will lead to 220 job cuts accounting for 38% of the company's UK workforce. The plants in are located at Winnington and Lostock. They have combined capacity for 700,000 m.t./year of synthetic soda ash. The Winnington plant, which Tata is proposing to close, is designed to produce 470,000 m.t./year of soda ash. A calcium chloride plant at Winnington will also close, but the adjacent sodium...
