High Costs Weigh On Ashland's Earnings

Ashland reported combined operating income for its chemical operations down 18%, to $53 million for its fiscal fourth quarter ended September 30. Increased raw material and freight costs within the functional ingredients and water technologies segment led the decrease in profits. Sales for the combined chemical segments rose 13%, to about $2 billion.
