Merck’s First-Quarter Profits Rise

Merck KGaA reported first-quarter operating income from its liquid crystals business up 6%, to €119 million ($189.7 million), on sales up 13%, to €234 million compared to a “relatively weak first-quarter 2007.” A 25% jump in organic growth was offset by unfavorable currency rates, Merck says. The performance and life science chemicals business reported operating income up 12%, to €53 million because of reduced expenses and an improved gross margin, the company says.
