The companies say this could result in the world’s first biotechnology-derived, drought-tolerant crop, and they expect the trait to be ready for commercialization by 2012, pending regulatory approvals. The trait derives its drought resistance from the Bacillus subtilis gene, or cspB, which helps the plant maintain growth and development during times of inadequate water supply, the firms say.
