Monsanto's fourth-quarter loss widens, 2013 guidance underwhelms

Monsanto's net loss widened for its seasonally weak fiscal fourth quarter, as corn and cotton seed sales fell below year-ago levels. The company posted a net loss of $229 million for the quarter ended 31 August, compared with a net loss of $112 million in the year-ago quarter. Excluding one-time items, the company posted a net loss of 44 cts/share, missing analysts' estimates of a net loss of 42 cts/share, as reported by Thomson Reuters (New York).  Sales slipped 6%, to $2.1 million.
