Danish Biopharma Company Secures $500-Million U.S. Contract

The outsourcing of vaccine manufacturing took a step up in scale earlier this month, when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) disclosed that it had agreed to contract out the manufacture of 20 million doses of smallpox vaccine to biopharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic (Kvistgård, Denmark) for $500 million. The U.S. government will add the purchased supplies of the vaccine, dubbed Imvamune, to its strategic national stockpile for individuals that are considered at risk, including those individuals with low levels of immunity.
